We extend our deepest sympathy to Ms. Lerner, who lost her mother, Ruth Solomon, this week.  Please encourage your children to send cards to Ms. Lerner care of the temple.  Comforting mourners is a beautiful mitzvah for us to practice and teach to our children.

Week Three:  Blue team won $18 for the SPCA.

We still need sponsor families!!  If your family would like to donate $18 for one of the weeks, please send the money in an envelope labeled Maccabiah to school.

GRADE 5 AND 6 PARENTS:  PLEASE CONTINUE TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL DRESSED FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND DON'T FORGET TO WEAR YOUR MACCABIAH TEAM COLORS (blue or white).

Important information:

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO COMPLETE SHABBAT ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:

          Grade 4 - 4x; Grade 5 - 5x; Grade 6 - 6x; Grade 7 - 7x

Please do NOT start lining up your cars until 10 minutes before dismissal.  Our dismissal line makes it difficult for cars to pass, and our neighbors are complaining.

Please note that there will be NO early pickups after 5:55 on Wednesdays, after 11:40 on Sundays or after 7:10 on Thursdays. If your child needs to leave early, you must come before these times. After that, you will need to wait on our normal pick up lines.

BAKITAH:  What's going on in our classrooms?

We invite you to discuss these topics with your children and, of course, feel free to enhance their learning with your own input!

WEDNESDAYS

Grade 2 (Morah Elizabeth):  We discussed the Ten Commandments and briefly talked about each commandment.

Grade 2 (Mrs. Young):  The second grade finished the Alef Bet by learning the letter Tav.  We also learned about Shavuot and the Ten Commandments.  Our holiday project was decorating and enclosing the Ten Commandments in an Ark.  They are proudly hung on our class bulletin board.

Grade 3 Chai (Mrs. Wilbur):  We discussed reasons for laws in our everyday lives; the different types of commandments (things we are to do vs. what we are not to do, those that are between people and those that are between a person and God). We ended by going around the room so the children could describe and give examples of each of the Ten Commandments in their own words.

Grade 4 Chai (Mrs. Burns):  Today in class we went back to review our year using our text book and making drawings -- one for each chapter, Torah, Avodah, and G'milut Chasadim expressing the ideas and the meanings behind them. For example, in Avodah, which means the work that we do to find our sacred connections, along with G'milut Chasadim which tells of personal acts of loving kindness, there was a drawing designed with stick figures holding hands in a circle and in the center was Mom and Dad lighting Shabbat candles and the words around them said Honor Your Parents and Enjoy Shabbat.  I personally liked the drawing which had the Israeli map and it said come visit and find yourself. We all got a chance to show our drawings and express the ideas behind them.

Hebrew

Mrs. Usen:  We reviewed all consonants and vowels. Our new sound this week was Zayin. We practiced decoding multi-syllabic words and then read phrases from several prayers and blessings.

Mrs. Rosenberger:  Students continued working at their own paces in Mitkadem.

Max for Ms. Lerner:  The students continued independent work in Mitkadem.

THURSDAYS

Grade 7

Mrs. Gartner/Ms. Lerner/Max:  We combined classes to celebrate Shavuot by making blintzes.  We also created Israeli art using different tools and media.

SUNDAYS

Grade 1 (Mrs. Usen):  Today we had fun learning about Shavuot.  We read a story about the holiday.  Then we finished our Torah books and made Ten Commandment tablets.  We ended the morning by enjoying a dairy treat of ice cream and strawberries.

THIS WEEK IN MACCABIAH WE HAD A SHAVUOT CHALLENGE:

✡   No-bake-pie dairy cookoff

✡   Ten Commandments quiz

✡   Ten Commendments patchwork quilt

✡   "Honor Your Mother" Shavuot/Mothers' Day speech contest

Israel –

Mrs. Burns:  We continued identifying where each city is on a homemade game of Israel’s map that I brought in from home.

Hebrew -

Mrs. Lerner:  We played Aleph-Bet Bingo with letter and vowel combinations.  We had munchkins to celebrate all the good work throughout the year.

Mrs. Rosenberger:  Students continued working independently on Mitkadem.

Mrs. Wilbur:  We continued working on V'ahavta.

Mrs. Young:  Reviewed Aleph-Bet and had an Aleph-Bet flash card competition.

Mrs. Goren:  Our last class.  We summarized what we've learned and spent time learning about Israeli money.
