Come join the Social Action Committee or bowl with Club Beth Am. Come see a ball game with TBAY or help plan an event with the Special Events Committee. Whether you enjoy discussing books with the Book Club, singing with the Temple Beth Am Choir, or joining us on our annual fishing trip, there is something for everyone within our community.
The Social Action Committee
The Temple Beth Am Social Action Committee defines its mission and activities in accordance with that established by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. The Committee is therefore
.... charged with implementing a program that furthers the moral message of Judaism, which is to use individual conscience and collective strength to achieve social action . . .
The Committee has identified needs within the Temple and the community, and endeavors to address these issues.
Here are just some of the projects the Committee has implemented:
an annual Coat Drive, with coats and jackets distributed to families in need
a furniture and household goods exchange, with items distributed to families in need
the sponsoring of a Temple team to participate in the Support Connection Walk, raising more than $2,700 to support services for women affected by breast and ovarian cancer
the development of a Mitzvah Project Resource list, to be used by children in the Religious School to satisfy the requirement of completing a service project prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs
the collection of cell phones, which are delivered to programs serving victims of domestic violence
Many more projects are planned. Join us in making a difference in our community.
The mission of Temple Beth Am's Brotherhood is to provide support and services to the congregation and our community; unite men of the Jewish faith whether or not they are members of Temple Beth Am, and promote social, educational, and intellectual activities for the advancement of friendship, knowledge, learning and temple life.
Check the website's calendar for Brotherhood's meetings and events. If you are interested in joining the Brotherhood, contact Steve Galper at brotherhoodbetham@gmail.com.
Sisterhood
Sistehood holds monthly meetings and events for women congregants. Check the website's calendar for the Sisterhood's meetings and events.
The mitzvah of Chesed (acts of kindness) is an ancient and essential Jewish concept whereby every individual is commanded to help members of the community who are recovering from illness or injury or are in need of comfort.
Our committee attempts to implement this concept by providing meals for members who are sitting shiva; get-well gifts; and visits or calls to those in need of comfort.
Our choir enhances the beauty and prayerfulness of our High Holiday services and adds humor and enthusiasm to our Purim celebrations.
In the winter, the choir works on rehearsing and planning for the annual Purimspiel. Some past Purimspiels were:
Oklahaman (a spoof on the musical, Oklahoma ), Schmaltz (a spoof on the musical, Grease ), Schmoozin' in the Reign (a spoof on the musical, Singing in the Rain). View a photo album of our 4th Annual Purimspiel!
In the spring , the choir starts working on High Holiday music.
Members of the TBA Bookclub celebrate their 3 1/2 year anniversary with dinner at The Heights restaurant on August 19, 2008
We have been meeting on a monthly basis, and have shared ideas, interpretations, and insights about the books we have read. Books, selected by consensus, represent fiction and non-fiction, best sellers and older works, and a variety of themes.
Please note that the Book Club is open to all. We welcome anyone who loves to read, and who enjoys stimulating discussions about books. Interested friends, neighbors and/or relatives are also welcome.
Our league is made up of some dynamite bowlers, average bowlers and "less than average" bowlers – so we all fit in!
The TBAs (that’s our league’s name) will be bowling on the fourth Saturday of each month – September 2008 through June 2009. This will be our ninth year of league bowling. Friends of Temple members are welcome. There will be an end-of-the-year Awards Dinner, most likely in mid-July.
Practice begins at 7p.m. • Bowling begins at 7:15p.m. sharp. Our location is Cortlandt Lanes.
But wait... There's more! We have over 20 committees and clubs, and any of them would be glad to have you! Click here for a contact list for all of Temple Beth Am's committees and clubs.
